Noa O’Neill (1983) sees his love for the artform of lettering stemming from two profound experiences during his childhood. During his formative years, he was captivated by his grandfather’s skill & craft of sign-painting family names on wooden boards which all ended up on front doors of many of the homes within the Moluccan district in Barneveld, where Noa spent most of his younger years growing up.
The second experience is what had immediately propelled him into world of graffiti & lettering where, at the age of 13, he was asked to keep an eye out while a friend spraypainted a massive graffiti piece on a wall. The limitless possibilities of creating outdoors is what had led Noa to continue this artform over the following decades.
His work focusses strongly on visualizing rhythm, flow and movement within the art of lettering. His unique approach of a hyper zoom into each and every shape of all letters & words within the entirety of graffiti writing and tagging creates an entirely new visual aesthetic through dynamic abstractionisms of its very origin. His visual explorations into these types of extreme fragmentations and distortions of shapes lead the observer into a completely new visual experience of textures, layers, color and movement combined.
Noa O’Neill was born in Amersfoort as a child of a Moluccan mother and an Australian father and for the most part of his life, has been living in The Netherlands. For a brief while, his life’s adventures had taken him to Lisboa, Portugal where he lived and worked between 2013 – 2017. He now resides in Almere with his girlfriend and their 3 year old son where he works on his craft from his studio.
